In observance of March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Akonadi Foundation is proud to present the 2024 Racial Justice Poster, titled “We Dance to the Beat of a Thousand Prayers” by artist Jose “Peps” Garcia.

Since 2008, the Akonadi Foundation has distributed an annual Racial Justice Poster to commemorate this important day, which marks the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960. On that tragic day, during a peaceful protest against South Africa’s oppressive pass laws, police opened fire on demonstrators in the Sharpeville township, killing 69 people, including 10 children. These laws were designed to segregate and control Black South Africans, requiring them to carry passbooks (identity cards) at all times.

By sharing this poster, we honor the legacy of those who fought against racial injustice and continue to stand in solidarity with movements for racial equity worldwide.
